“Mens agitat molem” – Mind drives matter.
This phrase from Eneida, the epic novel by Vergílio, is the first “mind teaser” from “Mensagem”, a book by Fernando Pessoa. The title contains some random (?) letters from Virgílio’s phrase – Mens agitat molem, giving a clue about the mindset behind this masterpiece.
I’m a huge fan of this motto, since it’s a tricky “facelift” of the famous “Cogito ergo sum”. The major difference is the final goal – to act, therefore I am.

Balanço tecnológico de uma década

Mais uma vez encontro um post interessante no blog do Celso Martinho, director do portal sapo.pt. Faz um balanço de 2000 a 2010 de um ponto de vista tecnológico, baseado nos emails trocados nesse período. Destaques:

Sapo de mãos dadas com o recém-nascido Google;
Telepac, Netc, Esotérica, Teleweb, IP Global e Oni eram os ISPs da altura. Já não existe nenhum (telepac é marca zombie da PTC e oni só existe no mercado empresarial). 56k velocidade era a loucura; Nada de redes sociais, msn e afins – era o apogeu do mIRC;
Mail – na web com o mail.pt (defunto) ou no computador com POP (e uma incrível multidiversidade de leitores). Início do spam massificado;
Dreamcast era a consola recém chegada do Japão. Hoje, a SEGA não produz consolas, apenas jogos para os arqui-inimigos Nintendo e para o carrasco, a PlayStation);
Javascript, AJAX e afins eram considerados magia negra;
Anualmente era dito que o ano seguinte era “o ano do dispositivo móvel”, mas isso nunca chegou a acontecer… E isso lembra-me a loucura de buzzword que foi o WAP…
Usabilidade era um conceito totalmente esotérico…

Internet Explorer Tweak – View Source Editor

A simple tip to enhance your web dev productivity (in case you’re testing some scripts’ output in Internet Explorer…): how to setup a different html viewer/editor (rather than the lousy Notepad), associated with IE’s View Source option?

Start -> Run -> regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Microsoft -> Internet Explorer
Create key: View Source Editor (under Internet Explorer)
Create subkey: Editor Name
Change the data value for the default string to the path of the new editor. Example, for Notepad++.exe: c:\Program Files\Notepad2\notepad++.exe
Reset IE

Since this method changes the registry, I don’t take any responsability in these steps… backup the registry before touching it.
