“Mens agitat molem” – Mind drives matter.
This phrase from Eneida, the epic novel by Vergílio, is the first “mind teaser” from “Mensagem”, a book by Fernando Pessoa. The title contains some random (?) letters from Virgílio’s phrase – Mens agitat molem, giving a clue about the mindset behind this masterpiece.
I’m a huge fan of this motto, since it’s a tricky “facelift” of the famous “Cogito ergo sum”. The major difference is the final goal – to act, therefore I am.

Carro do Google Street View em Lisboa

Desta vez fui eu que vi o carro :)

Pausa de almoço, estacionado aqui na Avenida de Berna, Lisboa, em frente à Faculdade de Ciências Sociais.

Alguns detalhes de dentro do carro:

no banco da frente, está instalado um computador c/ teclado, para monitorização das ruas a “varrer”;
nos bancos de trás, entre bolachas e batatas fritas, várias rolos de papel higiénico (!) e AJAX.

Com tantas lentes para limpar, não admira a quantidade de rolos :)

Acessibilidade no Metro Lisboa

Gosto da forma como os mapas do metro de Lisboa foram pensados. Existe uma versão simplificada com as linhas e as estações sem referências de espaço, o que funciona relativamente bem pois o utilizador consegue criar uma ponte entre o seu mapa conceptual e os conceitos que o mapa pretende ilustrar.

Da mesma forma, existe a versão sobreposta no mapa da cidade, em que se percebe que as linhas não são propriamente rectas, nem as estações distam o mesmo entre elas.
O que há de comum nos dois mapas é a presença desta legenda, que foi actualizada em Setembro 2009, quando foi feita a ligação da linha vermelha, da Alameda a S. Sebastião:

O que quer dizer “Mobilidade Reduzida”? Difícil? Impossível? Ou simples/facilitada? A iconografia está bem escolhida, mas a ideia a reter é o oposto do que está escrito. Basta ver que a versão em inglês faz mais sentido: “Step Free”.

Staying in Milan

Just a short review. If you are staying in Milan, Italy, AVOID Hotel Garda Milan at all costs!!
It is a lousy hotel and the pictures on the website don’t match at all with reality. And beside that, the staff kept improperly some of our luggage.
A terrible nightmare in Milan… and booking.com is not accepting my review :(

The Fun Theory

As an engineer, I love to think about good solutions for any kind of problem. One of my favourite domains is “everyday stuff” and social interaction solutions. So, I got delighted with these two videos from a Volkswagen Green Project.

1) How can we get more people to take the stairs over the escalator?

2) How can we get more people to throw rubbish into the bin, rather than onto the ground?
